Sick and Cinema
Topic: Cinema
Oh well, being down wit this cold gave me an excuse to watch the David Mamet film State and Main, the DVD of which had been gathering dust in the living room. Cute movie, but the cinematography was pretty flat and pedestrian. Yes, Mr. Mamet, we know your focus is on words, but this is a moving picture.

Sick SIC
Topic: Makin' Movies

Sick: I have come down with a cold.  Yucky!

SIC <sic>: Secret Identity Crisis the DVD is heading for completion. Scott has reassembled the film after a hard drive crash, and I am working on bonus materials for it, including commentaties and a behind the scenes bit. The latter was delayed because I mislaid the Mini DV tape that had the footage on it!  I finally found it yesterday. Whew!

Oh, and here's the crew photo...most of us are in this shot, with the exception of three of the actors (who had wrapped and gomne home), the Key Grip, Location Sound man, and Location Manager (who is taking the picture).

Back row (L to R): Brendan, Illya, Janet, Jenny, Bill, Dean (behind me), Me, Garrett (behind Scott), Scott

Front Row (L to R): Bert, Stewart, Dusty

And, yes, I'm wearing Solar-Man's goggles!

Pixelation Fun
Topic: Cinema

While at Tommy's on Oct. 28th, Dr. Kern mentioned this silly western film he'd seen in the 70s. Julio had his laptop open at the bar, so I hijacked it and did a search on some fragments of dialogue that Kern remembered. Voila! I found it!

It's somewhat politically incorrect, but cute and harmless. What's really astounding is the quality of the pixelation work (meaning stop motion action done with humans).

Happy B-B-Birthday you Thing From Another World, you!
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Just Fun

The Evite invitation for yesterday read as follows:

COME ONE COME ALL... BRING YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS, and even insignificant ones if you must.

No presents or cards are expected. Your attendence is the gift that keeps on giving (especially if you buy me a drink).

In celebration of the start of my 4th palindrome birthday (think about it), I'm going to be doing an all day and into the night bar and restaurant crawl, and you're invited!

The location listed is the official time and starting point, but there'll be more going on!  You're welcome to show up at ANY portion of it.

11 a.m. pre-party face stuffing at Ti Couz Brittany Creperie at 3108 16th Street (at Valencia).  Yummy crepes...and probably coffee over on Market Street afterwards. Call to see where we are.

OFFICIAL START
2-4 p.m.  Beer and/or other bevs at the Park Chalet (www.beachchalet.com), mere inches (ok hundreds of feet) from the mighty Pacific!

NOTE the Park Chalet is in the BACK behind the Beach Chalet.

4-6 p.m. Food and  T E Q U I L A (note the emphasis) at the incomparably tequilariffic Tommy's Mexican Restaurant (
www.tommystequila.com), at 5929 Geary Blvd. These are the BEST margaritas you will find for hundreds of miles. Forget those stories you all tell about bad tequila experiences in college...this ain't that shit.

7 p.m. (we'll never make it out of Tommy's on time): Ice cream or other dessertage at Toy Boat Dessert Cafe  (
www.toyboatcafe.com) at 401 Clement St.

If you're showing up after this, CALL to find out where we are!

7:30ish. If more beer is needed, we can stroll over to one of the local bars , all of which actually ARE walking distance!

After that...we WING IT!  Call to find out where we've ended up!

23 people showed up at various points, with the highest number making it for dinner at Tommy's, where 18 attended and 2 showed up just before we left for the final destination.

Thanks to Becky, Matt, Ben, Phoenix, Jim & Becky, Rob & Stephanie, Marcella, Kelly, Colin, Amanda, Russ & Christopher, Don & David, Jack & Nichole, Steve, Amy, Michele, and Deb & Shana for making my (belated) b-day.

Older
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Just Fun

You're older than you've ever been.
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.

You're older than you've ever been.
And now you're even older.
And now you're older still.

TIME! Is marching on.
And time.. is still marching on.
This day will soon be at an end and now it's even sooner.
And now it's even sooner.
And now it's even sooner.
This day will soon be at an end and now it's even sooner.
And now it's even sooner.
And now it's sooner still.

You're older than you've ever been.
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.
And now you're even older.

You're older than you've ever been.

"Older" by They Might Be Giants

So, yeah, today was my birthday. 44. A palindrome year. Had a lovely dinner with Terry and Carol at Garibaldis.  Mmmmm... lamb!

This weekend will be a bit crazier, what with a roving party planned for the afternoon and evening.

Oops...now I'm even older than when I started typing! And even older than when I started typing this sentance.  Augh!

The Time Machine: Forward into the Past!
Topic: Just Cause...

Given the family emergency that followed right on top of my return from Portland, Oregon in August, I never got around to writing about the trip there and the experience of working on the 48 Hour Film Project.

I just finished backfilling those entries, so here they are (click the links below:

A Walk On the Beach
Topic: San Francisco

For a change the title of this entry is fairly literal.

I've been going out with a very nice guy named Mike about twice a week for a few weeks now. Today we decided to make a short trip outside the city, popped over to Mill Valley and had lunch at the Dipsea Cafe.

Well, stuffed, we discuss that the most appropriate thing would be to go have a nap, but, no, we're going to press on as planned and go for a walk.  We decide to drive over to Stinson Beach, where we talke a nice, lesirely stroll across the sand. It's an absolutely beautiful day.  Ahhhhh.

Sicks, Sicks, Sicks!

By which I mean The Kinsey Sicks, "America's Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet".

Trixie, Trampolina, Winnie and Rachel: The Kinsey Sicks

Tonight I watched the DVD of their satrical concert film "I Wanna Be A Republican".  Check out the trailer to get an idea. It's pretty funny.

Oh, and there's free songs on their website here.

I met a two of the members (Winnie and Trampolina) at a fundraiser a few years ago.  Very talented guys...er, gals.

Short flight, Long Day
Topic: Just Cause...

Sometimes I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Lats night we were up rather late drinking after the screening of our film. Youd think I'd try to make it a short day.

So, it's up and at 'em. Scott delays going into work until after dropping me at the airport, so I pack up, we grab breakie at a nearby cafe, then I say bye to his kitty, Gloria, and we're off to the airport.

On the way I call my friend Diana, whom I knew was flying TO Portland this morning. She's just landed as we leave Scott's. Ships that pass on the freeway...or something.

Goodbyes said, I check in at Portland's airport. No sooner have I cleared security than I see a familiar face. I walk over. He looks up. "Good Time Charlie" I say, pointing at him.  Yep, it's the actor who played the title roll in one of the films ours was screened with. He's heading home to L.A. I give him my card, we chat, then he's off to the plane.

The flight home is uneventful, and I finish the book I've been reading: If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, by Bruce Campbell. It's a fun book, and oddly inspirational for someone who wants to make movies.

I'm in the office by 3. Now the fun begins. Right off, I see our visitor from Japan and wave, and he waves back rather tentatively. It's clear he doesn't recognize me. This theory is supported by the numerous double takes I receive from co-workers, some of whom don't realize who I am at first. I guess the shaved-head and lip makes me look a lot different. I suspect the latter especially.

Scott calls from Portland to say our short didn't win the audiece favorite last night. The winner? Good Time Charlie. I suspected as much... Scott's upset. I'm not surprised by the result.

I'm pretty beat, but I do get some work accomplished. I find my car where I left it on Saturday in the company garage. Now I have to drive to Cupertino for a Yakiniku dinner with our visitor and some select co-workers.  The food's fantastic (as usual), but I deflect the drinks as much as possible. I'm tired and still have to drive an hour to get home. Finally, we part and 10 p.m. and I hit the road. I text message one of my friends as I leave. He texts me back as I arrive in S.F. He is getting off work at 11 p.m.

Now, I should just go home and sleep. This is where I get really stupid. I go have a drink with him in the Castro. It's great to see him, but I'm fading fast.

1 a.m. and I get home and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
